The Bavarian Ministry of the Interior - Building Highways and Bridges
Roads connect people and economic areas
Efficient, safe roads are an important element in providing equal living opportunities all over Bavaria
About 90 % of all passengers and around 65 % of all short-haul freight are transported by our roads. The
Bavarian Department of Highways and Bridges
maintains, operates and improves a road network of about 2,300 km of motorways and 6,540 km of highways on behalf of the Federal Government as well as 13,550 km of state roads and some link roads (around 3,090 km). Parts of this network are 14,000 bridges, 58 tunnels with a total length of about 26 km and traffic engineering systems. We are constantly improving this network at annual costs of about € 1.2 billion.
Our
tasks
range from traffic master planning (network design, requirement planning and development plans), road planning, the preparation of regional planning and plan approval procedures to administration and maintenance. Apart from this, we advise administrative districts and municipalities and provide subsidies of around € 160 – 170 million a year for the construction of link roads and urban roads under the Local Traffic Finance Act – Gemeindeverkehrsfinanzierungsgesetz (GVFG).
We operate
traffic management systems
on almost 500 km of motorways in Bavaria with great success. These systems make traffic safer, more ecologically friendly and more economically. For about 370 km additional systems are being planned or currently under construction. The traffic conditions on Bavaria's motorways and timetables of public transport facilities are continuously updated and available on the Internet under
